LitCam Conference “Literacy and Media: Innovative ways of teaching Media Literacy”

LitCamFor the first time in Helsinki, a LitCam conference will take place on the 16th of August 2013. LitCam is arranging the conference in cooperation with FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange and Finnish Society on Media Education with focus on the theme “Literacy and Media: Innovative ways of teaching Media Literacy”.

Finland is known for its education system which is one of the best in the world. Although young people are traditionally measured as literate, many suggest that the level of media literacy varies a lot. This is a particular challenge from the viewpoint of developing electronic learning environments and e-material. According to recent research, young people seem to be missing media skills, for example critical evaluation and information retrieval skills, as well as the skills related to civic and creative culture, such as know-how on property rights. How have we ended up in this situation and what can be done in order to develop young people’s media literacy, for example from the perspective of teachers’ training, curriculum development and producing educational material for youth?

The conference will highlight some of these issues. Sylvia Löhrmann, Minister for School and Further Education, Deputy Premier of Nordrhine Westphalia will be one of the Greeting speakers. The Keynote will be held by the Professor of Media Literacy Education, Sirkku Kotilainen from the University of Tampere. A Panel Discussion with publishers and academics will close the conference day which is followed by a network reception.
