Call for Applications: UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2026

UNESCO has launched the call for applications and nominations for the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2026.

Since 1967, the Prizes have recognised outstanding and innovative programmes that promote literacy and contribute to the development of inclusive, literate societies worldwide. More than 500 initiatives led by governments, non-governmental organisations and individuals have received this prestigious recognition.

The theme of the 2026 Prizes is “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity”, highlighting the essential role of literacy in supporting individual empowerment, sustainable development and social participation.

Applications must be submitted through a nomination process by National Commissions for UNESCO or NGOs in official relations with UNESCO. Candidates are invited to request access to the online application form and prepare their submissions in time.

The deadline for candidates to submit applications to nominating entities is 18 May 2026. Nominating entities must submit their nominations to UNESCO by 1 June 2026.
