Call for Papers – 6th International Conference “Literacies and Contemporary Society: From Skills to Practices”

The Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth of Cyprus, in collaboration with the University of Cyprus, is pleased to announce the 6th International Conference “Literacies and Contemporary Society: From Skills to Practices”, taking place 24–25 February 2026 in Nicosia, Cyprus.

This important event is included in the official programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (first half of 2026), underlining its significance in the European policy and research agenda on literacy, skills, and social inclusion.

Conference Context

In today’s rapidly changing societies, the need to enhance and broaden skills for full and meaningful participation is more urgent than ever. Political, social, and technological shifts — including multilingualism, cultural pluralism, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence — demand new forms of literacy. These skills are not only essential for navigating the complexity of everyday life but also for safeguarding the future of democratic societies.

The conference will explore critical questions such as:

  • What are modern skills in the 21st century?
  • How can these skills be transformed into meaningful practices within diverse social, cultural, and socio-political contexts?
  • How can literacy be understood and developed as a pluralistic and socio-political practice that supports equity, inclusion, and active citizenship?

By situating literacy in its pluralistic and socio-political dimensions, the conference will foster dialogue among researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners to address these pressing challenges.
