Description
The DIE belongs to the Leibniz Association. The non-profit organization is funded by the Federal and State government, was founded in 1957 and developed to a registered association with 20 member associations and organizations from the field of continuing education research and practice.
The DIE is the central institute for the fields of research and practice in the area of continuing education in Germany. The institute’s research activities cover all areas of continuing education: adult learning processes, didactic design of programmes, staff, continuing education institutions, and financial, political and legal aspects of the continuing education system. The DIE also picks up on current problems and issues.
The institute’s Centre for Research and Development includes the programme “Social Inclusion/Community Education in Social Spaces“. Its main objective is research of specific requirements and factors, which are impeding the participation of particular social groups in continuing education. The programme focuses on projects in the field of literacy and basic skills. An additional core topic is the analysis of the participation in and relevance of continuing education for certain population groups (immigrants, low-skilled and long-term unemployed, illiterates and elderly). Thus, the department develops relevant parameters for the reflection, validation and concept of a continuing education with a commitment to both “Inclusion“ as well as the social right to education.
DIE has a long experience in research on a national, European and international level. The institute contributed to the establishment of study programme “European Master of Adult Education”. Furthermore, the DIE has expertise in teacher training and in curricula for basic skills in different learning arenas.
DIE carried out e.g. the Grundtvig project ”Professionalization of Literacy and Basic Education- Basic Modules for Teacher Training”. Main activities were to provide state of the art of current teacher training approaches, development of five basic modules for teacher training. Currently, the institute coordinates the national project initiative “Scientific Requirements for Institutionalization and Professionalization Concerning Literacy and Basic Education in Germany”.
